I’m so glad I found your column. All fascinating. Yesterday visiting here in Santa Barbara CA I hiked to a seal rookery. We had to observe from cliff top as there were pups. Thank you for all the good work you do. So important these days.
Article and paintings. I already bought your book. It is on my shelf het in Curcialinho. Portugal. I miss the lovely Appalachians that you describe and paint so well
What a neat way to combine science and art. The world needs more beautiful and important, informative work like this. Thank you for sharing - and creating!
(I love bats! Never had much interaction with them up close, but I've always loved seeing them swoop around at dusk and hearing them chitter—barely audible, they force me to listen more closely. Also, they eat a lot of bugs. Being in southeast Georgia, that wins big points in my book!)
Wonderful work! (Have you ever read The Bat-Poet by Randall Jarrell with illustrations by Maurice Sendak?)
Not yet! But I just looked it up and it looks very fun. Love Sendak's illustrations.

Thanks, Lischer! Glad you got to go on a seal rookery adventure—I'd LOVE to do that!
Wonderful

Thanks for taking the time to leave this comment! Yes, it's hard to imagine how many bugs there would be in the Southeast without bats.... yikes!
One of my favorite things of a summer evening is watching the bats start swooping around the backyard at dusk
I held a bat once at a Sierra Club talk. Such delicate and fascinating creatures!
Very interesting and beautiful illustrations.
